About
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and deployment company whose stated mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. In OpenAI’s own framing, the company sits at the intersection of frontier AI research, safety work, and real-world deployment. That combination is important because OpenAI does not present itself as only a research lab or only a product company; it positions itself as an organization building advanced AI systems while also trying to shape how those systems are introduced into public, professional, and developer use.
From a product and business perspective, OpenAI now operates across several layers at once. On the consumer side, it is best known for ChatGPT. On the developer and enterprise side, it offers the OpenAI API platform and tools for building AI-powered applications and agents. Its official platform materials describe an “all-in-one platform for agents,” while its broader site presents OpenAI as both a research organization and a deployment company. That makes OpenAI structurally different from companies that focus only on model research or only on end-user software: its identity is built around training frontier models, exposing them through APIs, and packaging them into widely used applications.
OpenAI’s organizational structure is also a major part of its profile. According to OpenAI’s official explanation of its structure, the organization was founded as a nonprofit in 2015. In 2019, it created a for-profit subsidiary to help scale research and deployment, while keeping that entity governed and controlled by the nonprofit. OpenAI later said in 2025 that, after reviewing how to evolve the organization, it decided the nonprofit would retain control. That governance model matters because it is central to how OpenAI publicly explains the balance between capital-intensive AI development, commercialization, and mission oversight.
OpenAI is also a leadership-driven organization with a fast-evolving executive structure. Sam Altman remains CEO of OpenAI, and in 2025 the company announced that Fidji Simo would join as CEO of Applications, reporting directly to him, while Altman would continue overseeing Research, Compute, and Applications overall. Around the same period, OpenAI announced an expanded role for Mark Chen as Chief Research Officer. These updates reflect how OpenAI has been separating and strengthening leadership across research, product, and operational execution as the company scales.
In practical terms, OpenAI has become one of the defining infrastructure and product companies of the current AI wave. Its public materials span model research, safety, enterprise usage, APIs, education initiatives, and large-scale consumer tools. That breadth is part of what makes OpenAI so influential: it is not just creating models in isolation, but building a full ecosystem around how advanced AI is accessed, governed, and used.
